Design your college dorm with AI

Designing your dorm room is a chance to transform a blank space into something that feels like home. Simplify the design process, from creating layouts to shopping for decorations, with AI room design help.

Coordinate with your roommate over which items to purchase

Before you start designing your college dorm room, you’ll need to coordinate with your roommate, if you have one. Use generative AI to list all the typical dorm room necessities and their average costs to help you avoid buying duplicate items and ensure that no one is spending significantly more than the other. Your AI checklist may include essentials like a mini fridge, a microwave, table, trash can, and coffee maker. Ask AI to divide up the list evenly. Once that’s said and done, begin planning how to personalize your shared space to reflect your styles.

Shop for the typical dorm necessities and decorations

Generative AI search is an excellent way to find items on the internet for the best price possible, according to your budget. If you’re shopping for a mini fridge, try a prompt like this:

“I’m searching for a mini fridge for my college dorm room. My maximum budget is $200. Please suggest options to purchase.” AI will then list available mini fridges and provide a link to where to purchase each. This will save you time scouring the internet (all while finding options that are within your budget!).

This works for decorations, too. If you’re going for a certain vibe, ask AI to recommend decorations that fit the bill. Want a witchy style dorm room? Simply ask AI, “Can you find dorm room decorations that are witchy, mythical, and cozy?” AI may suggest moon phase wall hangings, enchanted tapestries, purple and green bedding, and figurines.

Get college dorm layout ideas

After you’ve purchased your items, it’s time to create your dorm room layout. The flexibility to arrange the space depends on your room’s size and whether the provided furniture is movable. Most dorm rooms already come with furniture, like a bed frame and mattress, desk and chair, and dresser. To help visualize different layouts, use AI to map out how you and your roommate can best use the space. Many colleges provide a dorm floor plan with dimensions, furniture placement, door and window locations, and closet space. Provide the floor plan to your AI assistant along with the items and their dimensions you plan on bringing. Include all these details in your prompt, and AI will generate different layout ideas for you to try out.

Try a prompt like this:

  • I’m moving into a college dorm and want to create different layouts. The room is 12 x 20 feet, with a door on the south wall and a window centered on the north wall. It includes two twin XL beds, a desk, a chair, and a dresser, which are all movable. The room plan is attached. My roommate and AI are bringing:
    • A mini fridge (2.5ft H x 1.8ft W x 1.5ft D)
    • Bookshelf (5ft H x 2.5ft W x 1ft D)
    • Storage bins (three, each 1.5ft x 1.5ft)
    • Please generate 2-4 dorm layout ideas that maximize space, provide easy access to windows and closets, and allow for a comfortable study area for each of us.

Using AI to help with college dorm room ideas is one of many ways to set yourself up for a great college experience. Next, learn how to use AI for interior design and vision boards.
