About

My name is Klaas Giesbertz and I am a senior researcher at Microsoft Research AI for Science working on machine learning methods for electronic structure problems.

I did my Ph.D. with Evert-Jan Baerends at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands) on the use of time-dependent one-body reduced density matrix functional theory to calculate electronic excitations. After my post doc with Robert van Leeuwen at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), I came back to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on a VENI grant (NWO) and became an assistant professor in 2017. In 2022 I took a partial appointment as visiting researcher at Microsoft and since April 2025 I work full time as senior researcher at Microsoft.
