Why use AI to grade your essay?

Sometimes, it’s difficult to find issues with your own writing. This may be due to a few different factors, such as:

  • Fatigue: Mental exhaustion may make it difficult to spot errors if you’ve been working on an essay for hours or days.
  • Lack of objectivity: When you’re familiar with your work, it makes it difficult to identify typos or unclear sentences.
  • Emotional investment: If you’ve put a lot of time into your work, you may become emotionally attached to it, making it harder to edit or change parts of your essay.
“AI provides speedy, unbiased feedback on your writing, allowing you to make edits before your essay is due.”

Getting a second set of eyes on your work is a great way to identify any problems so you can get a better grade. If your peers are busy, upload your essay to generative AI and ask it to grade your paper. AI provides speedy, unbiased feedback on your writing, allowing you to make edits before your essay is due. AI will also help you understand the quality of your work.

Share the rubric with AI

Your teacher or professor might have given you a rubric when they assigned the essay. A rubric shows how a teacher will grade your work. For example, a rubric might look at content, organization, grammar, and voice, along with a point system like “Excellent,” “Good,” “Satisfactory,” or “Needs Improvement.” Upload your rubric to your favorite AI platform along with your essay and try these essay-grading prompts:

  • Based on the uploaded rubric, where does my essay need improvement to get it to a full 20 points?
  • Using the rubric, how would you grade my essay?
  • Look at the attached rubric. How would this essay score based on the “organization” criteria of the rubric?

Confirm that you followed the assignment

When you’re highly focused on finishing an essay, it’s easy to overlook certain aspects your teacher may have requested. Not following the assignment correctly can mean losing points on your essay grade. Copy and paste the assignment details into AI along with your essay and ask if you have correctly completed the assignment. Here are examples of prompts to try to make sure you’re following the assignment:

  • This essay aims to persuade the reader that college should be free. Did I effectively prove my point?
  • Does this essay effectively compare and contrast To Kill a Mockingbird with The Catcher in the Rye?
  • My essay is supposed to explore the themes in Pride and Prejudice. Does this essay include all of the key themes, and does it do a good job of explaining them?

Discuss teacher preferences with AI

Think about what your teacher focuses heavily on when grading your work. Do they tend to deduct the most points on your word choice, grammar, or thesis? Share what your teacher focuses on when grading a paper, and ask AI essay tools how to improve your work based on your teacher’s preferences. If you have specific examples, like a Word document with comments from your teacher, that will give AI an even clearer idea of what to look for when it grades your work. Copy and paste your essay into AI and try these prompts:

  • My teacher heavily focuses on punctuation when she grades my papers. Do you see any punctuation issues in my work?
  • My teacher is very concerned with plagiarism and wants to ensure everything in our work is cited correctly. Is there anything in my work that is missing citations?
  • AI makes it easier to get the grade you deserve. Find out more ways AI benefits students, like for studying or relieving stress during finals week.
